It doesn’t take much imagination to extrapolate the current world situation into a scenario in which our actions or non-action could change the world and civilization into a state that will be unrecognizable. The more you examine the problems objectively, the date of 2012 becomes more feasible for the critical tipping point.
Say, we continue to approach these problems with the same mindset, the emphasis being on the acquisition of materials by the individual and by extension the nation state. My belief is if this type of greed and materialism continues, we will reach that tipping point and our climate will reach a point of no return; the earth will undergo such dramatic changes as to force us to adopt a new mindset.
The other possible scenario is our present mindset changes before we reach that point of no return; an understanding that sacrifice and cooperation among peoples and nations is our only hope. We will address these issues as the emergency situations that they are and our policies would reflect such.
I don’t hold out much hope for the second, my reading of history leaves me with the idea that the human species is reluctant to leave the comfort of routine unless his very existence is in question. It never ceases to amaze and confound me as to the ability of humans to continue in their comfortable routines while trouble is knocking at the door.
Now, I believe Americans hear the knocking, but will not respond to all the noise until their hair dryers and electric can openers are threatened. Many people seem to believe that there is no need for them to become overly concerned because surely our technology will deliver us and just as surely our leaders are working at the problem.
The question of leadership, in my opinion, is part of the problem. Our system means that no one making decisions for you and me and more importantly your grand kids (I say your, because I don’t have any) will be alive to face the future with the consequences of their choices now. I will never understand why every grandmother and grandfather in America is not in the streets demanding and snarling with an incredulous righteousness that only a grandmother can, demanding that her grand kids should be our priority.
As far as our technology, conjure on this 2012 fact. Our sun reverses its rotation on a cycle of every 11 years. Only the middle third of the sun undergoes this reversal, but that is enough to raise the incidence rate of what are commonly referred to as solar flares. Now, it begins to get interesting. In addition to the 11 year cycle a cumulative effect becomes a player in the plot. Let’s just indicate that the last time these two cycles came together was in1859. In 1859 the extent of our technology was the telegraph. A solar flare caused the need to replace every telegraph line in the world. It fried them along with causing the largest outbreak of fire events in modern history.
The two cycles come together again for the first time since that event in the year 2012. Stop, for a moment, and consider the dependance of our culture on technology today, particularly everything that utilizes electricity. Now imagine every piece of technology from satellites to your electric can opener fried and a period of three years before the electrical grid can even be restored.
Not saying it will happen, but it could, and wouldn’t it be an interesting experiment to see if we finally came together to address our shared futures or continued to destroy ourselves through short sighted policies. I’m just saying, that when you can’t go to a switch and make night into day there are going to be alot of desperate and pissed off people and maybe, just maybe, a few snarling grandmothers.

it is not about Gore, who i personally think has the personal charisma of a twinkie, people who are interested in distracting always attempt to make it about personality. i believe that bush should be impeached because of his crimes against the constitution and not because i can't stand the little twerp.
on climate change, i can't be kind about this, it's like those believe the earth is only 6000 years old. if we do not pull our heads from our butts, i assure you that climate change and its ramifications will be the problems that will inform and shape your grandkids lives.

vent their anger like a mother or grandmother can?? Stop by my blog
sometime and see how I vent, very frequently. Will be keeping an eye
on your site, now that I am aware of "wingfire"
I do have a "rain stick"
It has been said that every American today has 80 times the impact on the environment that the Native Americans had when the Europeans first arrived. Perhaps we can go back to that stage and survive.
will definitely stop by your blog, and yes i believe that everyone should be pissed, but i believe nothing would carry the impact to the american public that 100,000 grandmothers in the street demanding change. the perceived moral authority much as the monks in the news.
wingfire
my question to you is, why aren't you snarling now? and if you are why not the streets and express it.
wingfire
according to the "twisted hairs" the sacrifice in the genocide of the red man can only come full circle when we realize what they had to teach the world.

The one I had come to mind as I read your text was "If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem" The simplicity belies it functional error.
So too "fuzzy science" and the word games of a rogue government leds credibility to the notion "talk is cheap", another idiotic phrases that endorses "fuzzy thinking" or "lazy brain" (not to be confused with lazy eye which is not a product of indifference).
(pause in the diatribe while the writer resupplies caffeine)
Gore, in the words of Bugs Bunny, is a maroon which I believe is a misspelled and misspoke form of "moron" .. A rain man, if you will, who has an single remarkable ray of brightness at the dramatic cost of all or any other sensibility.
The notion that we have a remedial solution to a planet crawling with humanity is at best an exercise in oblique thinking.
How we conduct our life at this moment seems to be the single most effect method of successful action.
"Pay no attention to the man behind the Curtain" Wizard of Oz
Nice post - great food for thought - Mad GrandMothers - what a concept - I but a few pissed off Dads and Moms wouldn't hurt either - I still see a lot of talk but not a lot of action - Scary things are happening in all directions but I have yet to hear of a valid solution to most - just talk, talk, talk. I am not being funny - I am being serious - who has a plan? I'm open to a plan that will get proven results - without including "Michael Moore"
since my study with the hopi, water and the environment has been foremost in my mind. even trying to understand a "bigger picture". now i agree with you about gore and the oversimplification of the problem and solutions, but i will also concede that no one payed attention to those of us who have been screaming about this for 35 years and some one listened to him. i know that no politician has yet begun to detail the sacrifice that is going to be needed by each of us, particuliarly by americans. as far as a simplification of the problem, it is alot worse than commonly presented.

good for you, my advice: make it something you feel passionate about, get involved in a local issue, and give 'em hell.
wingfire
i shocked, as he speaks so sweetly of you.
wingfire
I think you may have mis-heard him as I have never heard him speak nicely of anyone (and we are not on good terms) - and I even defended You when he spoke ill of you at his last interview -
I know this boy; he is sweet, a musician, not the monster that this state is trying to turn him into. I am trying to raise money to challenge his sentence which, I believe, falls under cruel and unusual punishment. I am contacting the ACLU of North Carolina (Yes, they opened a branch in this backwards’ state because of a surfeit of constitutional violations.) NC just within the last two years tried to pass a law whereby they would be able to sentence 16 years olds like him to a penitentiary with adult criminals. We fought that but the churchgoers here keep trying! You might not agree with me, but I think there is something wrong with a government that imposes sentences like this one on kids. It is evil. Since the government has turned jails and penitentiaries over to corporations, there is a strong inducement to fill the beds of these moneymaking facilities! Oh, well, all we can do is fight the bastards. :) Take care, Tome
Suppose it does happen? How long before the human race would it take to fall back on it's normal routine. We would have to wait till the next catacalysmic event. What about some horrific man made scenarios like crazy fanatics destroying property and killing people on a 9/11 scale but five or ten fold?
i'll ask him to clear all the misunderstanding on our next visit.
i do like him as a filmmaker.
wingfire
excellent, it is of no concern about how i feel about your choice of issues, it should be something that you can continue to express your opinion with passion the next time.

the sun flares definitely fall into a maybe, but while y2k was also a maybe, the other factors of dramatic climate change and its far reacing consequences is not.
wingfire
"grab your jock" because as with many things california is going to at the starting point for all of this foolishness.
wingfire
can't really comment on how you would look, but have always thought you can't go wrong with dark sunglasses.

It is a good drill to simply do without power for a week to keep oneself "tuned up" for such an eventuality.
As for the Mayan calendar I believe the way the told time it is 2012 now. Not to fret one may be well advised to think prudently and prepare accordingly.
As for angry Grandmothers... I concur!
Come back with your status...
In other news.
Just watched the Nimitz make steam from SD,,,those boys on the catapult are feeling the burn..
Saw some heavy lifters at 0 dark thirty , move north and hobbled back to watch the stock market tank...
All an all it is just another day on the planet.
Take care.

Will those supporters....
Will those supporters of President Bush and those fans of his NEOCON propaganda machine, FOX News, still have faith in HIS agenda and ITS -News Coverage when our country is going down for the third count?
-when agencies designed to protect us from corporate greed have been made toothless at his direction,
-when, we are made sick or killed by FDA-approved genetically modified foods known to produce disease,
-when the Gates Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation, lead others foundations in their plot to corrupt our normal plant seeds with genetically modified seeds whose offspring do not produce seeds - ensuring that they, the owners of the world's supply of seeds, are the only supplier; they can punish countries that displease them, even areas of this country that displease them, by withholding seeds, by starving them to death,
-when we are killed by drugs rubber-stamped by the FDA,
-or just plain run down, in time, from too little food, the result of food cans and containers that continue to shrink in direct proportion to the devaluation of the dollar and resultant sharply rising prices we are being charged for them, some having doubled in the last year,
-when we cannot meet our rent or mortgage payments because our electric bills, like food, have risen so drastically,
-when we have to choose between paying our auto insurance premiums and our doctor and hospital bills,
when BigPharma, no longer hindered by government oversight, is charging us prices that in many cases represent a 1,000 percent profit,
*when it has enough lobbying power to keep on the shelves drugs that are killing and 20,000 are dead before they take it off the shelves,
*when they lobby to make vaccination of twelve year old girls with a one of their drugs mandatory,
*when they spend untold thousands of dollars lobbying our congressmen and senators to support a law that will outlaw our purchase of vitamins and minerals without a physician's prescription, the only avenue available to people without medical insurance for both preventing and treating illness.
Can you still have faith in this president and his NEOCON propaganda news service? Can you?
While the dollars we earn are worth less each day, this president, your president, with the support of both Republican and Democrats in the House and Senate, is spending $338 million A DAY, BORROWED MONEY that we can never hope to repay, to:
**kill Iraqi’s (men, women, and children),
**to purposefully target and bomb their hospitals,
**to purposefully pollute their drinking water,
**to target and bomb their power stations (thereby sentencing to death babies in incubators, the sick who cannot live without dialysis and artificial life support, etc.),
**to kill and maim our own men and women in uniform-whom he rewards just a few weeks ago by cutting funding for veteran medical expenses; and
**to reward those corporations (to the tune of billions of dollars) in which he and/or his vice president have financial interests!
Can you justify the unbelievable profits being enjoyed by the oil companies (the largest profits in history!) since your president began his war, profits that come directly from our paychecks every time we purchase fuel for $3.00 plus a gallon, or pay a power bill that is so high we have to cross item after item off our grocery list or dip into our rent or mortgage money or the insurance premium payment that is due? Can you?
Tell us, will you, fans of FOX News and loyal supporters of this president, while you stand up there on that stage, how you justify his spending money each day on killing when that money:
--would provide health care for all Americans,
--when that money could support the school lunch medicaid programs he wants to eliminate,
--when that money could provide scholarships and grants to help pay college tuitions,
--when that money would build literally hundreds of thousands of homes for Americans,
--when that money would build manufacturing plants (which by law should not be permitted to outsource anything except products!),
--when that money would build new bridges, highways, public buildings,
--when that money would pay for a national transit system and ease our dependence on oil,
--when that money would support research into ways we can meet the upcoming challenges of global warming,
--when that money that could do so much good is, instead, used by your president for killing and destroying and enriching himself, his vice president, and his special corporations.
Can you stand up there, look us in the eye, and justify your undying loyalty to this criminal president who lies every time he speaks,
this president who dreams of the day when critics of his insane leadership and agendas can be instantly silenced by the enforcement of laws and acts he already has in place for that day,
laws that give him the power and control of a totalitarian dictator, the power and control of God!
laws permitting torture and other abuses so terrible that they will keep most men silent when they see their neighbor taken away in the dead of night - for fear that they will be next?
Can you?
Will your undying loyalty remain on that day when your president realizes his biggest dream: the day he replaces our Constitution with the “New American Constitution,” a document that does not contain any guarantees of life or liberty or the freedom to speak one’s mind or protest government abuses, a constitution that is not encumbered by a bill of rights, rights that, he will tell us, hindered “America’s War on Terrorism?” Will it?
